Underground Aqueducts of Cantayo in Nazca

2000 years ago, in pre-Inka times, the inhabitants of Nazca developed a system of underground aqueducts to irrigate dry lands that lacked surface water. Thus, they were able to combat the ever-growing dessert. The system is unique in Peru and perhaps in the whole world. In spite of the harshness of the desert, in the Nazca region over 30 underground channels still exist and are used by local farmers who grow cotton, corn, beans and potatoes, as well as a variety of fruits. In addition to the channels, sitors may also see various lines etched on the desert floor representing geometric forms and the Inca ruins of Paredones.

Description Tour:

This tour can be done at any time during the day. Our driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel at the designated time. We drive towards the area of Cantalloc and on the way see the Inca ruins of CAXAMARCA, an Inca building used in the past as a resting place. Today local people call this place Paredones. It was built long ago when the Incas expanded their empire into the Nazca Valley. We will tour this Inca citadel and our local guide will provide a good insight into Inca history. Later we will visit a sector known as the needles, where it is possible to observe a huge trapezoid drawing from the top of a little hill. We will be very close to the trapazoid and can see up close how the lines are constructed. Afterwards, we will visit the ancient channels of Cantayo. Here we will walk around for about 40 minutes, visiting the enormous spirals holes and also the channels. Our guide will explain how the Nazca people built these channels and we will take a stroll in the surrounding fields to see some crops produced by the native community. End of the tour.
