Tour to the Petroglyphs of Chicchitara

5000 years ago the Palpa Valley was inhabited by early societies which used the flat surfaces of volcanic rocks to portray their everyday lives as well as their animals, birds, ancient priests and a number of geometrical designs. Over 300 petroglyphs have been registered. The Petroglyphs of Chichictara are perhaps one of the earliest expressions of writing of the Peruvian ancient past. Among the figures visitors may see are dozens of wonderful representations such as: Condors, Andean felines, snakes, Llamas, Andean deers and many others. This archaeological zone is located just one hour away from the city of Nazca, passing the famous Nazca Lines desert.

Description Tour:

This tour might be done either early in the morning or in the afternoon. The archaeological place that we will visit is located in the city of Palpa, some 40 minutes away from Nazca.
We will drive north across a desert plateau known as the Pampas. On the way we will stop at the Mirador, a metal tower from where it is possible to observe two of the famous Nazca Lines (The Hands and The Tree). We will continue our trip till reach the city of Palpa where the 4000 years old petroglyphs are located. The ancient petroglyphs are spread over a narrow valley on the way to the Andes. Here there many sections that are very well known by our guides. Our local guide will show you first the famous rock where likenesses of three ancient priests are carved. This representation is known as the Rock of the 3 Ages. It is undoubtedly one of the best attractions of the zone. Afterwards we will keep moving uphill to see another section where we will find more figures. Among them is a nice representation of a Andean Cat and a huge flat stone, on which are carved snakes with two heads. Then we will climb a little hill where there are more interesting figures. Finally we will visit the last section, which is full of carved rocks. Here you may wander around and discover by yourself many other petroglyphs. Afterwards we will return to Nazca. End of the tour.
